How to decide the frequency of lymphatic drainage treatments

Edema and lymphedema are common conditions in humans these days. It causes redness, tenderness, and swelling in the various parts of the body. While edema results from the accumulation of body fluids in arms and legs, lymphedema is caused by the blockages in the lymphatic system which obstructs the removal of the body fluids. While there are a series of treatments available for these conditions, lymphatic drainage massage is the best of all. Manual lymphatic massage can bring about significant improvement in the pain and swelling caused in the patients, and it can be done quickly at home.

How lymphatic massage reduces swelling?
Swelling is common in body parts like arms, legs, wrists, ankles, as gravity causes the body fluids to get accumulated around the cells. Massaging gently helps in reversing the pressure and sending the fluids back into the blood vessels. Sometimes, just raising the arms and legs can also help reduce the swelling. If this doesn't work, then it implies that the swelling and puffiness is due to the blockage in the lymph vessels.

Once you decide to take the manual lymphatic treatment, it becomes crucial that you determine the frequency for the same with your massage therapist.
1. You should decide the frequency of the massage sessions, by inquiring about the daily exercise schedule that you'll have to follow. Exercise form a significant part of the therapy as it stimulates the lymphatic system. This means that the people who lead a sedentary lifestyle will have to give in more efforts to get the best results. So depending on your lifestyle, the number and frequency of massaging sessions you'll need may differ.
2. Always schedule the lymphatic drainage massage sessions after you've spent quite a considerable time in bed. This could be due to some surgery or injury. In this case, you'll take just three to four sessions to get the things in place.
3. If you observe that there's been a slow down in your body's metabolism rate, you should schedule a manual massaging session as soon as possible. In this case, you should be regular with your treatment and follow it till the end to achieve the best results.
4. Also, if you observe that you are prone to skin allergies and other infections like common cold and flu, you should choose to go for lymphatic massage sessions once in every three months to get the best results.
